  1. Someone warn Rob Kelly!

Despite my pal Rob’s rabid hatred for him, I’ve always liked the Composite Superman, and this tale. I first met Joe Meach in this very story, albeit the reprint in DC Special Series #23, which was on of the DC digests. The cover showed CS zapping Superman, Batman, Robin, Aquaman, Green Arrow and some guy named Nova!!!

Turns out the cover was playing a bit coy with the readers, as Aquaman, GA and this Nova (who turns out to be Superman in another guise) weren’t in the same story with Composite Superman, but separate tales in the issue. Oh well, it was still a great comic, and a great story!

I really enjoy Bob’s perspective as a fan who was there when all this hit. That’s a fresh take amongst the usual comic podcasting crowd, and I’m definitely going to have to take a listen to his Superman Forever Radio!

Silver Age silliness aside, you guys hit the nail on the head: the threat level to Superman and Batman is huge and quite real, which is unusual in the Silver Age. The stakes were very high here, which is why I think this story still resonates, and stands out among the entire WF run.

    Looking forward to part 2!

    Chris

  2. Two of my favorite hosts, in one podcast, together! I’m a big fan of the Composite Superman, and it was great to hear this episode. Michael and Bob did a wonderful job, expressing the joy of the Silver Age, as well as the silliness, in this story. Even as a kid of eight at the time I read this story originally, I thought that Superman and Batman (“and don’t forget Robin!”) really dodged defeat at the hands of a super-villain who had tremendous advantages over them, but I also thought, even as an eight-year-old, that Superman’s trying to see under the Batman cowl was goofy, as was Composite Superman’s choice of green skin, for no apparent reason other than to remind everyone that he had Brainiac 5’s super-intellect.
I’m really looking forward to Part II, with more discussion and banter between Michael and Bob. Thank you both for a really fun episode.

  3. Michael says:

Thanks for the kind comments, guys. Glad you enjoyed the episode. Bob was a great guest. Look for more fun as we wrap up the story in part 2 next week!
