  1. Great episode guys. Always a pleasure to hear Shawn stop by.

I was a HUGE fan of BTAS, and the comic series. When Knightfall just kept dragging on and on and on, it helped me keep my sanity by giving me a classic Bat-fix. Plus, the whole series is just damn fine comics.

I do remember this issue being a HUGE deal. Everyone wanted more DC characters in the animated series, and the associated comic. At this point, only Zatanna had appeared on the show, with Jonah Hex to follow. The others came when the show went to Kids WB. An animated Superman HAD appeared in Superman & Batman Magazine, which was a kids magazine published by Welsh Publishing, but featured comics by the animated and Adventures comics staff. But this was his first time in the comic proper.

I will admit, I was disappointed to see the Super-Mullet, Fabio/Amish Lex and Maxie Zeus, who I’ve never been a huge fan of. But the sheer awesomeness of Superman, Batman and Parobeck’s art more than made up for it.

See that art contest blurb on the cover? I won that! Yes, one month, my letter was selected, and I was told I’d receive some gorgeous Parobeck art. It never came. It must have gotten lost in the mail. I should have followed up on it more, but hey, I was just starting college, so I was kind of busy, ya know?

Parobeck was such a breath of fresh air in amongst the awful, cross-hatched art of the 90s. He was a master and left us far too soon. I recommend tracking down his run on the DC/Archie Impact series, “The Fly” fantastic stuff.

No less than Bruce Timm praised Parobeck’s work, readily admitting he brought his own flair to the Bruce Timm/Animated style.

Kevin Nowlan and Mike Mignola actually designed Croc and Mr. Freeze for the animated series, so it’s very fitting to see them here on those pin-ups. Nowlan actually contributed to several key designs, including Robin, the Mad Hatter, Man-Bat, and the Riddler.

Thanks for such a delightful romp. Comics should ALWAYS be this fun.

    Chris

  2. Michael says:

Whoa! Congratulations on winning the contest! Too bad you never got the art, though. That would’ve been awesome.

I didn’t know Nowlan and Mignola contributed so much to B:TAS. Ya learn something knew …, I guess. Looking at the designs, I do see a lot of their styles in them.

  4. Another wonderful episode! Thank you to both Michael and Shawn! I don’t really know this issue (or, for that matter, the Batman Adventure books), but I love any display of, and celebration of, what I consider the proper friendship between Superman and Batman. Clearly, based on the story and your commentary, the creators of this story really understood that. Wouldn’t it be nice if more of the writers and artists of today understood that a bit better?
    Keep of the good work!
