One Response to “Superman & Batman Special Presentation: Happy Birthday, Batman!”

  1. Michael,

Great Batman tribute episode! Fantastic idea, and very well executed. I’m a big fan of the first two stories, and the Barr/Davis run is HIGHLY underrated amongst great Batman runs. To me, this was the final chapter of it, as Year Two kind of went astray a bit, mostly due to McFarlane coming on board. Like Mr. Pantarese, I liked his stuff at the time, but the shortcomings jump out like crazy now, esp. compared to a master like Davis. Barr’s take on Jason Todd, despite this Post-Crisis origin flashback, was clearly the earlier, more stable Jason, but it’s just another example of the flux the DCU was in as creators scrambled to understand what to do after Crisis.

I believe “The Man Who Falls” was reprinted in a special Digest-sized TPB inserted into early versions of the Batman Begins DVD. I have that version, and I recall this story being there. This story, along with the first arc in Legends of the Dark Knight (which this story flashes back to with the mask totem angle) established that Bruce studied under different masters, after Miller had hinted on it with Bruce’s long absence from Gotham in Batman: Year One. The stories in that Secret Origins TPB were all Post-Crisis, even though later stories negated some or all aspects of them.

I must be honest and admit I don’t care for 90% of Morrison’s Batman run. I think he did a lot to drive me away from the character’s monthly adventures. I did enjoy the “Club of Heroes” storyline, but I felt his obsession with “Robin Dies at Dawn” was a bit much and way too self-indulgent, even though I knew the story well. I can’t imagine how someone who DIDN’T know the story felt about it. Obviously, I’m in the minority when it comes to my opinion on what he did with Batman, but I stand by it. I still enjoyed the discussion you and Mr. Tate had about it.

Again, great show, and I’ll have to look into those “Legends of Batman” episodes!

    Chris
